Hari Raya marketing and iklan Lebaran: a guide for Malaysia and Indonesia
When to run Hari Raya and Lebaran ads in 2027, how mudik and THR shift timing, halal claim rules, and sample headlines in Malay and Indonesian.

Short answer
Start Hari Raya and Lebaran ads before Ramadan, because festive shopping is largely planned and much of it happens early. Hari Raya Aidilfitri is expected on 10 March 2027 in Malaysia and Indonesia. Work back from that date: THR is due a week earlier, mudik empties cities, and delivery cut-offs need to be in your ads well before then.
For 2027, Hari Raya Aidilfitri is expected on Wednesday 10 March in both Malaysia and Indonesia, with Ramadan expected to begin around 8 February. Plan your ads backwards from that date. The real deadlines for a small brand are earlier than Raya itself: the day customers get paid their festive bonus, the day they leave for their hometown, and the last day your courier can deliver.
Write in the language your customers use at home, sell products rather than religion, and only use the word halal if you hold the certificate. The rest of this guide covers dates, timing, platform rules and sample headlines you can adapt.
When is Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Lebaran 2027?
Both countries expect Raya on 10 March 2027, but the final date depends on the moon sighting announced shortly before. Malaysia's 2027 public holiday list marks the Raya dates as subject to change, and Indonesia's joint ministerial decree (SKB 3 Menteri) sets the national holiday and the collective leave days around it.
| Date (expected) | Malaysia | Indonesia |
|---|---|---|
| 8 February 2027 | Awal Ramadan (state holiday in Johor and Kedah) | Start of Ramadan, confirmed by the government's sidang isbat |
| By 3 March 2027 | n/a | THR due (H-7, seven days before Lebaran) |
| 9 March 2027 | n/a | Cuti bersama (collective leave) |
| 10 to 11 March 2027 | Hari Raya Aidilfitri, federal holiday | Idulfitri 1448 H, national holiday |
| 12 and 15 March 2027 | 12 March is a third day in Melaka | Cuti bersama |
Sources: Malaysia's list as published by the Prime Minister's Department and reported by Human Resources Online; Indonesia's SKB 3 Menteri, published by the Ministry of State Secretariat on 15 September 2026. The THR deadline is explained below.
If you also sell to customers in other countries, note that the Fiqh Council of North America's calculated date for Eid al-Fitr is Tuesday 9 March 2027 (moonsighting.com). One product page can carry two different Eid dates, so check which one each ad refers to.
How early should Hari Raya and Lebaran ads start?
Start before Ramadan. Google's research in Indonesia found that 93% of Ramadan purchases are planned, and nearly half of purchases happen in the first week of Ramadan (Google, Shopper Moments Study with Ipsos, 2023). The same study found 88% of shoppers bought from at least one retailer they had not used before, so Ramadan is a real chance for a newer brand to be tried.
That means your awareness ads should already be running when people make their lists. Here is a five-phase plan for 2027, built from the expected dates above. Adjust it once the official dates are confirmed.
| Phase | Expected dates | What to run |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Pre-Ramadan | 18 Jan to 7 Feb | Catalogue, new range, pre-orders for baju raya or baju Lebaran and kuih raya |
| 2. First week of Ramadan | 8 to 14 Feb | Your main offer, bundles, hampers for corporate buyers |
| 3. Mid-Ramadan | 15 Feb to 2 Mar | Restocks, sizing help, delivery cut-off reminders, THR timing in Indonesia |
| 4. Final week | 3 to 9 Mar | Last order dates, local pickup, e-vouchers and digital gifts |
| 5. Syawal | From 10 Mar | Greetings, thank-you messages, open house (rumah terbuka) catering, next-season sign-ups |
For a fuller week-by-week plan that covers Ramadan itself, see the Ramadan 2027 ad calendar.
How do mudik and balik kampung change your ads?
They move your customers away from home for days, so your cut-offs come earlier than Raya. Indonesia's Transport Minister reported that 147.55 million people travelled during the Lebaran 2026 transport period (Kontan, 30 March 2026). In Malaysia the same journey is called balik kampung.
What this means for a small brand:
- Put the delivery cut-off in the ad. "Order by 1 March" is more useful than "order soon". Only use a date your courier has confirmed.
- Offer delivery to the hometown. Many people want the hamper or the outfit to arrive at their parents' house, not at their own flat.
- Check your location settings. If you target a city, your customers may be in another province by the final week. Look at last year's results by location before you narrow anything.
- Design for phones. Travel days are phone days. A 4:5 image with large text reads well in a moving car.
What are THR and duit raya, and do they affect timing?
THR (Tunjangan Hari Raya) is the religious holiday allowance that Indonesian employers pay staff. Under Manpower Ministry Regulation No. 6 of 2016, it must be paid no later than seven days before Idulfitri (Cabinet Secretariat). For Lebaran on 10 March 2027, that is around 3 March. Check for any 2027 update from the ministry before you plan around it.
Many Indonesian brands time an offer for the days after THR is paid. Before you copy that, look at your own sales from last Lebaran and see whether you actually had a lift that week.
Duit raya is the Malaysian custom of giving money in small envelopes (sampul duit raya) during Hari Raya, mostly to children. It creates its own product category: printed envelopes, envelope packs for families and personalised designs. Sellers of these need to be in market early, because people buy envelopes before they visit relatives.
What do Malaysian and Indonesian shoppers buy for Raya?
Groceries lead, followed by fashion and hampers. A Grab survey of its users, reported by Marketing-Interactive in May 2021, found:
| Malaysia | Indonesia | |
|---|---|---|
| Groceries as gifts | 63% | 65% |
| Fashion and apparel | 41% | 37% |
| Hampers and gift baskets | 23% | 36% |
| Most popular price band | Hampers: 36% chose RM51 to RM150; 34% under RM50 | Gifts: 31% chose IDR71,000 to IDR150,000 |
The same article reports NielsenIQ figures showing Ramadan FMCG sales rising by up to 15% in Malaysia and up to 30% in Indonesia compared with normal weeks. The survey is from 2021, so use it as a guide to price tiers, not a forecast.
A practical takeaway: build your ads around two or three clear price points, with the lowest one under RM50 or IDR150,000, and say what is inside.
What should Hari Raya and Lebaran ads say?
Use the words people use. In Malaysia it is Hari Raya Aidilfitri, usually shortened to Raya. In Indonesia it is Idulfitri (also written Idul Fitri), and in everyday speech Lebaran. Do not put "Lebaran" in a Malaysian ad or "Aidilfitri" in an Indonesian one.
The standard greetings are also different. Malaysia: Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri, maaf zahir dan batin. Indonesia: Selamat Hari Raya Idulfitri, mohon maaf lahir dan batin. Both ask forgiveness, physically and spiritually.
These sample headlines are examples for made-up brands. Each one names a product, a detail or a date.
| Language | Example headline | English gloss |
|---|---|---|
| Malay | Tempahan baju raya kini dibuka | Raya outfit orders are now open |
| Malay | Baju raya sedondon untuk seisi keluarga | Matching Raya outfits for the whole family |
| Malay | Sampul duit raya bercetak nama keluarga anda | Duit raya envelopes printed with your family name |
| Malay | Tempah sebelum 25 Februari untuk penghantaran sebelum Raya | Order before 25 February for delivery before Raya |
| Indonesian | Hampers Lebaran, kirim langsung ke kampung halaman | Lebaran hampers, sent straight to the hometown |
| Indonesian | Baju Lebaran sekeluarga, ukuran anak sampai dewasa | Lebaran outfits for the whole family, children's to adult sizes |
| Indonesian | Pesan paling lambat 1 Maret, sampai sebelum mudik | Order by 1 March, arrives before you travel home |
| Indonesian | Kue kering Lebaran, 500 gram per toples | Lebaran biscuits, 500 g per jar |
Before and after: a Malay headline rewrite
Before (example): Anda seorang Muslim? Raya tahun ini wajib beli. ("Are you a Muslim? This Raya you must buy.")
After (example): Baju raya sedondon untuk seisi keluarga. Tempah sebelum 25 Februari. ("Matching Raya outfits for the whole family. Order before 25 February.")
The first version asks about the reader's religion, which Meta's rules forbid, and borrows the word wajib (religiously obligatory) to push a sale. The second names the product, the audience and a real deadline.
Which platform rules apply to Raya ads?
The same religion rules apply in Malay and Indonesian as in English. Meta's Advertising Standards say "Ads must not contain content that asserts or implies personal attributes", and religion is on the list (Meta). So Anda seorang Muslim? or untuk umat Islam seperti anda ("for Muslims like you") are likely to be rejected. Meta also removed religion-based detailed targeting options from January 2022 (Meta). Target by location and language instead, and let the product and the greeting do the work. Our guide to Meta's personal attributes rule has more examples.
On TikTok, the advertising help centre says "Ads with political, religious, or other sensitive content are not permitted" (TikTok). Advertise the outfit, the biscuits or the hamper. Keep religious messaging out of the ad.
Can you say halal in Malaysian and Indonesian ads?
Only if you hold valid certification for that product. In Malaysia, misuse of halal descriptions and logos is an offence under two Trade Descriptions Orders made in 2011. The minister responsible restated in January 2025 that companies face fines of up to RM5 million under the Definition of Halal Order (The Star). Do not put a halal logo or the word halal on a creative unless the product carries a current Malaysian halal certificate.
In Indonesia, halal certification for food and drink from medium and large businesses has been mandatory since 18 October 2024. Government Regulation 40 of 2026 extended the deadline for micro and small food businesses, cosmetics, clothing and Muslim worship equipment to 17 October 2028 (BPJPH). If you are not yet certified, describe ingredients plainly and leave the halal claim out. See halal claims in ads for the UK, Malaysia and Indonesia side by side.
Checklist for your 2027 Raya campaign
- Put 10 March 2027 (expected) in your calendar, then mark 3 March (THR in Indonesia) and your courier's last delivery date before mudik.
- Have pre-order ads live by mid-January and your main offer live by the first day of Ramadan.
- Write separate Malay and Indonesian versions. Do not machine-translate one into the other.
- Put a real price, a real size and a real cut-off date in every final-week ad.
- Remove any line that asks about the reader's religion or uses religious obligation to sell.
- Use the word halal only with a current certificate for that exact product.
- Plan Syawal ads now: greetings, open house catering and a thank-you offer for first-time buyers.
Adrizq writes ads in Malay and Indonesian from your product page and flags invented urgency and unsupported claims before you publish. Whatever tool you use, confirm the final Raya date when it is announced and update your cut-off dates the same day.
Frequently asked questions
When is Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2027 in Malaysia?
Hari Raya Aidilfitri is expected on Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 March 2027 in Malaysia, according to the 2027 public holiday list, which marks the dates as subject to change. Melaka lists 12 March as an extra day. The final date is confirmed by the official moon-sighting announcement shortly before Raya, so update your delivery cut-offs when it is made.
When is Lebaran 2027 in Indonesia?
Indonesia's joint ministerial decree for 2027 sets Idulfitri 1448 H as a national holiday on 10 and 11 March 2027, with collective leave (cuti bersama) on 9, 12 and 15 March. The government confirms the start of Syawal through its sidang isbat, so treat the dates as expected until then and plan your last order date well before mudik.
When is THR paid in Indonesia?
Under Manpower Ministry Regulation No. 6 of 2016, employers must pay THR (Tunjangan Hari Raya) no later than seven days before Idulfitri, known as H-7. For an expected Lebaran on 10 March 2027, that is around 3 March. Check for any 2027 update from the ministry before you time an offer around it.
Can I write 'Selamat Hari Raya' in a Facebook ad?
A festive greeting such as Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri is generally fine, because it does not claim anything about the reader. What Meta's rules forbid is content that asserts or implies the viewer's personal attributes, including religion, for example 'Anda seorang Muslim?'. Pair the greeting with your product and offer, and avoid addressing the reader by their faith.
Should I use the same ad for Malaysia and Indonesia?
No. Malay and Indonesian share roots but differ in vocabulary, spelling and festive terms. Malaysians say Raya, baju raya and balik kampung; Indonesians say Lebaran, baju Lebaran and mudik. Greetings differ too. Write each version separately, use local prices in ringgit or rupiah, and set delivery dates that match each country's courier network.
